Is it Cheaper to Service an Electric Car

Electric Car Charging

This is the question many potential electric car buyers are asking. To answer this let’s have a look at the cost of servicing an electric car compared to petrol/diesel cars and Hybrid cars which has a combustion engine.

Definitely the electric cars system is a lot simpler than the equivalent combustion engine of a petrol car or diesel car so servicing a pure electric car is simpler.

There are fewer costs for replacing parts and consumables in electric cars in the long run. So they should have fewer maintenance issues so in essence you would think servicing them will be cheaper.

In general this is correct but there are some instances where this differs.

Hybrid cars use a traditional combustion engine to service and has the addition of battery technology that uses self charging and plug in technology to account for. So not surprisingly the cost of servicing a Hybrid car is a bit more but not a lot more.

After all it has few extras to cater for, such as additional battery coolant and a few extra checks to carry out.

The good news for Hybrid car owners is that for long term maintenance Hybrid cars should save costs on brake discs and pads because in general they are not needed as much when the electric system kicks in and further good news is that engine consumables can be cheaper.

Diesel cars tend to be costlier to service than petrol engine cars due to their complex engine and its emissions control systems in all diesel cars tend to be the most expensive.

Interim and Full Service Schedules of Electric Cars

Electric car servicing intervals currently tend to be recommended at the same yearly intervals as petrol and diesel equivalent cars or after 10k miles for most Electric cars.

For combustion engine cars like petrol or diesel engines they should be serviced every 10000 or 12000 miles so the difference is a lot. Electric cars have fewer moving parts so servicing these should be a bit quicker and in generally a little cheaper.

For high mileage car users where the driver has an interim car service say every 6 months the electric car owner will be better off. This is because after the routine inspection part of the interim service follows an oil change and replacement of parts on petrol and diesel cars but this will not be so on electric cars.
On hybrid cars we would assume the interim service would be much the same as petrol and diesel cars.
