If you aren’t sure of the difference between a car tyre and a 4x4, please see below some useful information:

Let’s make a start by covering the road tyres, these tyres are cleverly designed to maintain a grip on mud, grass, snow, and dirt. The tread on these tyres is very deep and they have much larger gaps in between them than your average car tyre. On a particularly muddy surface, a road tyre's shallow tyre tread would soon become completely clogged with mud which would then, in turn, lead to a complete loss of friction, this is vital to ensure good grip rather than having a spinning tyre which serves no purpose.

On and off-road tyres allows a far deeper tread depth, therefore, the tyre is far less likely to clog up and lose friction. This is due to the rubber been in contact with the surface always. This, however, can increase friction as when the vehicle is on a typical road surface they will become worn a lot faster than a tyre which is designed solely for road use. The friction can slow the vehicle right down which in turn will have an impact on your fuel consumption. One simple way of remembering this is the greater the friction between the vehicle and the road will mean your engine is having to work a lot harder to move the vehicle.
